A Small Desk With A Big Future

You probably don’t know me because I have always been inconspicuously tucked away in some corner of the office furniture showroom, but my name is small desk.  Until recently my distant cousins, the large desk family, were infinitely more famous and desirable than I could ever hope to be.  But when the market began to falter I slowly gained popularity in a rather surprising way. It’s like this.  All those huge corporations were losing money hand over fist and needed to revamp their entire organizations from the ground up.  One of the first things to go (besides the Lear Jets and trips to Acapulco) was the oversized lavish offices with their grandiose executive desks.  It wasn’t long before I was brought out, dusted off and had my very own display in the front display window “Small Desks At Affordable Prices.”  I will never forget the day it all began.

I was sitting in my corner watching the dust begin to gather on my cousin, the large corner computer desk and on grandfather executive desk himself.  Well, I heard voices heading in our direction and this voice I had never heard before was saying, “I’m looking for a small desk for my new office.”   Mr. Salesman tried to steer his attention to my formerly illustrious relatives but Mr. New Voice insisted that his new downsized office space could only accommodate a small desk.  After much hemming and hawing Mr. Salesman found his way to my corner and said “Oh, here is a small desk that should do well for you.”  He began to list my virtues, many of which even I was unaware of!  “This is a lovely small wood desk.”  (I never knew my middle name was Wood!)  This small desk can be used as a small computer desk, a small secretary desk or even a small laptop desk.  I was so proud of my many talents and so puffed up with pride that I virtually dusted myself off and stood up straight so Mr. New Voice could get a real good look at me.

I don’t live in the corner any more.  Now I have a new home and a place of prominence in the office of Mr. New Voice.  (I don’t call him that anymore since we have become such good friends, now I call him Boss.)  At any rate, I have boss’ ear so when he decided that he needed a place to work on his computer I introduced him to my cousin, small computer desk.  Boss loved the suggestion, although I let him believe it was his idea.  After all, I didn’t want to jeopardize our new found friendship.  Boss is so happy with both me and my cousin that he is going out tonight to bring home another family member, small student desk, for his son who is leaving soon for college.

Actually, my small desk family now has a big future ahead of us.  The CEO recently paid a visit to all the field offices of the corporation and was truly impressed with Boss’ new setup.  He is using our office as a prototype for the entire corporation and now the entire small desk family will be moved in to the newly purchased smaller office suites around the country.  A few months ago I would never have envisioned such good fortune coming my way.  Yesterday I overheard the CEO tell Boss that even when the economy picks up he is going to stay with the small desk offices in order to maintain financial stability for the company.  Boss was awarded a bonus for his ingenuity.  I don’t know what it was but it made him very, very happy and he came to work today with a new can of Pledge to keep me bright and shiny for all to see.  Now I really am a small desk with a big future.
